Customer was using a dip coating method to apply conformal coating to their PCB assemblies. The sharp edges of the surface mount technology (SMT) components and the tip of component leads displayed less than desirable conformal coating coverage.

Technical situation

Customer was using a dip coating method to apply conformal coating to their PCB assemblies. The sharp edges of the surface mount technology (SMT) components and the tip of component leads displayed less than desirable conformal coating coverage. Subsequently assemblies did not pass the water leakage test.

Solution

PRS recommended a potting/encapsulation and conformal coating approach. Conformal coating was applied inside a spray booth using manual spray techniques to achieve desired film thickness and uniformity. Encapsulation of segregated targeted areas achieved the environmental protection requested by the customer.

Benefits

Assemblies were qualified and passed the water leakage test with a high first time yield. PRS satisfied the customer’s design needs with the product design upgrade.
