What is Layered Coating Methodology?

Layered conformal coatings consist of premium synthetic materials applied in layers to printed circuit boards or other electronic substrates. PRS engineering combines PRS XY-C™ with high-performance urethane or silicone to form an exceptionally thin film barrier against a host of environmental threats. This “layered methodology” provides unmatched shielding for products that need a high level of protection without the weight of encapsulation epoxy.

Benefits of Layered Conformal Coating

At Plasma Ruggedized Solutions, our layered conformal coating application process forms a very thin and highly precise film, protecting electronic printed circuit boards and other sophisticated products against various environmental threats. Our coatings provide shielding from moisture and contaminants, preventing short circuits and corrosion of conductors and solder joints.

Our conformal coating methodologies also protect circuits from abrasion and solvents, significantly extending the life of the components and circuitry. The layered coating methodologies at PRS minimize dendritic growth and the electromigration of metal between conductors. Stress relief is also provided, as is the protection of the insulation resistance of the circuit board.

Materials Used for Thin Layered Coating

Our conformal coatings contain various high-performance chemicals, including parylene, polyurethane, and silicone. Depending on the type of environmental exposure required of the finished product, either urethane or silicone is used to form a thin film barrier against contamination.

Parylene XY-C-Dimer

PRS Parylene XY-C™ dimer presents the same high performance, high purity characteristics as its sister product, Blue Spark™, without the added UV tracer material. Plasma Ruggedized Solutions offers a high-performance Parylene C dimer that is UL94VO rated and meets the performance standards of Mil-I-46058C and NASA Low Outgassing (ASTM-ES95), IPC-CC-830B, and UL746.

Polyurethane - Arathane 5750 A/B Kit

Arathane 5753-A/B (LV) is an amber, translucent, two-component polyurethane casting compound. When cured, this material provides exceptional electrical insulation to electronic parts, exhibiting superior reversion resistance under heat and high humidity conditions. This material meets NASA outgassing properties essential for applications in outer space and high vacuum environments when cured. Arathane5753-A/B (LV) is typically recommended for encapsulating coils, trimpots, potentiometers, and modules with complicated circuitry or stress-sensitive components.

Dow Corning 1-2577 Silicone

Silicone 1-2577 demonstrates excellent properties as durable dielectric insulation, even over a wide temperature and humidity range. Silicone creates a barrier against environmental contaminants, providing stress-relieving shock and vibration absorption. In addition to sustaining physical and electrical properties over a broad range of operating conditions, silicones are resistant to ozone and ultraviolet degradation and feature good chemical stability. Dow Corning 1-2577 silicone contains significantly less solvent than organic coatings and is available in various cure systems.

Layered PCB Coating for Applications in High-Performance Industries

Our premium layered conformal coatings are ideal for industries that rely on safe data storage and reliable PCB board usage. Without proper protection, electronic circuitry can degrade due to contaminants, mechanical stress, and vibration, resulting in failure that can be hazardous. Our layered coating methodologies provide superior protection for various industrial applications, including automotive manufacturing, aerospace components, UAV-unmanned aerial vehicles, military aircraft, and more.
