Technical situation

A customer came to PRS with a Parylene coated PCB. The customer was experiencing field failures due to the extreme environmental conditions.

Solution

By the time PRS was engaged in this program the customer had invested almost 2 years of their time trying to solve the problem. PRS evaluated the efforts transpired up to the point, and developed a custom proprietary process in an effort to resolve the design and environmental challenges. The PRS engineering team implemented a combination of two conformal coatings; Parylene and a single component clear liquid conformal coating with excellent physical, chemical and electrical properties. A plasma treatment to promote adhesion between the two coatings was added to the process.

Benefits

Within 1 month PRS submitted first articles for approval; assemblies were subjected to a highly accelerated life test analysis and passed testing the first time. Subsequently the proprietary design PRS pioneered has proven successful on a myriad of other applications for more than 12 years. In all this time PRS has had no returns and customer feedback on performance and environmental endurance has been sterling.
